Education Development Plans (EDPs)

During Gr. 8-12, all students are expected to create and maintain a personalized Educational Development Plan (EDP). With the help of staff members, students are expected to develop a plan for their future and establish short and long-term goals to make that plan work. Throughout each school year, VLC students will contribute new information toward their own career research project which is kept in an online portfolio on the Xello platform.

The following tasks that contribute to the personal student portfolio are completed using the following  grade-level timeline:

Grade

Targeted Tasks

9

Students complete a career matchmaker assessment, a learning styles assessment, and a skills assessment.  The Xello website will then provide students with careers that match their interests and skills. Students will also begin to explore these careers and other related occupations.

10

Students review and update the career matchmaker, learning style,s and skills assessments. The Xello platform will then match students with careers that match their interests and skills.  Students will also choose a research career which will include a presentation.

11

Students participate in a career project tied to authentic community-based learning with a demonstration of what has been learned.  The post-secondary plan guides students through planning for a career and planning for potential college opportunities.

12

Students complete a senior exit portfolio focusing on their career planning research. Students also create a senior exit presentation focusing on the EDP fundamental questions:

  • Who am I?

  • Where am I going?

  • How will I get there?

Parents, friends, and community members are also invited to watch the presentations.

Parent Engagement Opportunities

It is critical for students to engage in the EDP process to help guide their short and long-term learning goals!

Parents are also encouraged to support their students through discussion and suggestions for building or revising their student's current plans.
